Managing Litigation and Reducing Legal Costs as a Team Effort

For Allen Waxman, who was recently named Senior Vice President & General Counsel at Pfizer Inc, lawsuits and the risk of litigation cannot drive business decisions.
Under Waxman's leadership, Pfizer has also launched an early case assessment program. When a matter comes in, the litigation practice group works to get a handle on what the strategy will be for that matter within 90 days. Pfizer also develops a formalized budget for the matter as part of the early case assessment. And after many matters, Pfizer also does an after-action review to determine exactly what happened and how the process can be improved for the next time.
Recently, the "Pfizer Partnering Program," or P3, was launched. The litigation practice group initiated talks with law firms last year about the P3 program, and the first law firms were being selected as Inside Litigation went to press.
